Earlier in 2015, Driving Force’s John Sutcliffe and Rob Eyes attend the FTA #DriverCrisis summit at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The event was oversubscribed, and attended by over 750 hauliers, including Volvo Trucks, Members of Parliament, the DVLA and the DVSA to name but a few.
The presentations on the day revolved around the shortage of qualified drivers in the UK, and how to address the situation.
There is currently a driver shortage of between approximately 50,000 and 60,000 LGV drivers, and the number of LGV drivers in employment has decreased by 12.5% compared to 10 years ago.
Other factors effecting why drivers do not want to enter the industry include;
– Pay rates
– Driver CPC deadline and the DQC award process
– General image of the industry
– Vocational driving age limits
– Young driver insurance premiums
– Hours of work
– Driver medical requirements
– Driver roadside facilities (virtually none for female truckers)
Driving Force Operations Director John Sutcliffe said “Driving Force take these matters seriously, and not only do I have a Driver CPC qualification, but also a Transport Manager’s CPC in Road Haulage Operations and am a member of the regional freight council for the FTA.”
It’s not all doom and gloom and things to be discussed moving forwards to address the situation, including;
– Look at pay rates across the whole industry
– Promote younger drivers to enter the industry
– Address the insurance situation to lower the age/experience
– Start apprenticeship schemes
– Utilise the Armed Forces
– Helping promote Women In Logistics
– Look at returning overtime rates, which, in a lot of cases has gone to flat rates
– DVSA looking at employing more HGV examiners
– Promoting people from the warehouse to become professional drivers

We have recently partnered with Wrexham-based Mainetti to offer Driver training and are wanting to do our bit to get the wheels of the driving industry turning again – hopefully this partnership will see that happen!”
